OpenAthens Access Guide

Use this guide to help you use our new sign in method for Library Resources.

Introducing OpenAthen Access

What is OpenAthens?

OpenAthens is an access management platform, allowing libraries to enable and monitor access to subscribed online content. You can learn more from the OpenAthens webpage.

Why is Wesleyan College switching to OpenAthens?

All GALILEO libraries will be switching to OpenAthens from EZProxy. OpenAthens Single Sign On provides a more seamless and secure log in process for users. In most cases, you will be able to access library resources for eight hours across different platforms without the need to sign in again. We also hope to get better usage statistics to help us make informed decisions.

What will change?

  • The sign in process to access resources off campus will look a little different for users.
  • Previously saved links will need to be updated.
  • Anyone who was using an account on individual platforms will need to make note of the merging process outlined in this guide.

What should I do if I run into issues accessing Library Resources?

Fill out the Library Resource Access Issues Form.

How will I sign in to Library Resources?

If you are using Library Resources on Wesleyan's Campus, you will be recognized as an authorized user and will not have to complete the sign in process for all resources.

If you begin from GALILEO, Wesleyan College's Databases A-Z, or follow a "view full text" link from LUCY from off-campus, you will see the following log in page.
Use your Wesportal username and password for access.

Wesleyan College Single Sign On Page prompts users to enter email address or username and password.

In most instances, you will remain logged in for 8 hours. If you switch browsers or devices, you will have to log in again.

Refer to the Password Management Handouts on the Portal for assistance with your Wesportal Credentials.

If you previously saved your password and have since changed it or if you mistype your password the first time, you may encounter an error. Try clearing the cache, switching browsers or using the handout below to troubleshoot this issue.

Signing in from Individual Platforms

If you do not start out from a Library provided link, you will now be able to sign in to view resources to the Library subscribes to directly from the provider's page. The sign in process will vary by site, but look for a prompt to log in through OpenAthens, your institution, or a Single Sign On Service. From there, you will select Wesleyan College and then enter your Wesportal credentials as above.  Below are two examples of how this may look.

Updating Saved Links

If you have previously saved links that worked from off campus, then you will need to find the resources and save them again.

Links that include .wesleyancollege.idm anywhere in the link will be need to be replaced.

You can find the desired resource and generate a new "Athenized" link, or use the new Link Generator Tool to create your own.

Please reach out to Rhiannon Bruner (rbruner@wesleyancollege.edu) if you need assistance with linking.

Merging Accounts from Individual Platforms

The first time you sign in to an Ebsco provided database through OpenAthens, a new personal Ebsco account will be created. If you have previously set up a personal account in EBSCO,  and you want to retain your information, use this guide to merge your accounts.

ProQuest Ebook Central does not offer this functionality. If you need to gain access to the information associated with your ProQuest Ebook Central account, see this guide on how to request access to items saved to your Bookshelf.

The first time you log into Artstor through OpenAthens, you will be prompted to create a new account or link an existing account. After this initial set up or merge, OpenAthens will automatically log you into your personal Artstor account.
