Celebrating the Freedom to Read

This guide was created for Banned Books Week to highlight the censorship of books in our community and across the country. It outlines the history and current state of banned and challenged books, as well as avenues for advocacy of the freedom to read.

Below are some tools, articles, and lists to help you find ways to fight censorship. Most highlight these main avenues of support:

  • Be aware and stay informed on censorship across the country, but more importantly in your own community.
  • Advocate at the local level in support of librarians, teachers, and administrators who want to promote the right to read. Writing to legislators and elected officials and even local news sources can amplify your voice.
  • Join social media campaigns like #bannedbooksweek and #FReadom to spread awareness.
  • Use one of the many tools available to report of any censorship you hear about. Having accurate, up to date lists helps in the fight for the freedom to read.

We read banned books.
