Library Technology: 3D Printing Policies

Get to know the technology the Library offers!

Submissions

3D Printing is available to all current Wesleyan students, faculty, and staff.

Save your file as either a .stl or .obj onto a flash drive or external device. Fill out a 3D submission form. Bring the form and files to the circulation desk during normal library hours. Your print job will be added to the que in the order in which we receive them. See 3D printing polices for exceptions to this rule.
Non Wesleyan-affiliates may submit requests to the Circulation Desk, but may be backlogged during peak use during the semester.

Cost

Cost is a flat fee of $2.00 plus $0.10 per gram of filament. Cost of printing includes object, rafts and supports. Total cost is determined once your order is complete. We will provide you an estimate when your job is queued.

3D Printing Policies

3D Policies

1. The library's 3D printers and scanners may only be used for lawful purposes. No one is permitted to create material that is:

  • Prohibited by local, state, or federal law.
  • Unsafe, harmful, dangerous, or poses an immediate threat to the well-being of others.
  • Obscene or otherwise inappropriate for the library environment.
  • In violation of another's intellectual property rights. For example, you cannot reproduce material subject to copyright, patent, or trademark protection.

2. The library reserves the right to refuse any 3D print/scan request.

3. The library cannot guarantee model quality or stability, nor confidentiality of designs. Responsibility for removing rafts and supports is up to the user.

4.  Items must be picked up by the individual who submitted them or their designee, using valid ID. Items not picked up within 30 days after being printed become the property of Willet Library.

5.  Only designated library employees will have hands-on access to the 3D printer. Wesleyan College students wishing to gain experience using 3D printers should make an appointment with a librarian (wlibrary@wesleyancollege.edu), or at the Circulation Desk during normal library hours, for training.

6.  The 3D printing queue is prioritized based on factors such as academic priority, class due dates, reprints, and other issues as they arise. We reserve the right to alter queue order based on these factors.

7.  If you have a group submission or project with 10 or more files, we may charge an additional processing fee. To best accommodate large orders, please contact us 4-6 weeks prior to your "need by" date at wlibrary@wesleyancollege.edu, or at the Circulation Desk during normal library hours. For instructors, please contact us at the beginning of the semester so we can coordinate the best time for your class to submit their projects.

Turnaround Time

Printing times vary based on size, complexity, and any backlog. Once you submit your request, we will contact you within two business days with anapproximate turnaround time, and estimate of cost. To best accommodate large orders, please contact us 4-6 weeks prior to your need by date at wlibrary@wesleyancollege.edu. For instructors, please contact us at the beginning of the semester so we can coordinate the best time for your class to submit their projects.
