Bias-Free Language

The APA Manual emphasizes the importance of bias-free language. Using inclusive and respectful language helps to avoid prejudice and demeaning attitudes towards individuals and groups.

Chapter 5 of the APA Handbook 7th ed. provides guidance on reducing bias on a variety of topics, including age, disability, gender, racial and ethnic identity, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status. The APA also outlines General Principles for Reducing Bias and other guides on Bias-Free Language by topic.
