Formatting Your Reference Page

Formatting Your Reference page
Location At the end of your paper, on a separate page.
Title Center References, in bold (but not italicized or in quotations) at the top.
Order Arrange your sources alphabetically by the first word.  In most cases this will be the author or editor but sources lacking these will be by title.
Format Every source starts flush with the left margin with the following lines indented .5." Use this video to create a hanging indent in World 2016.

Elements of APA Citations

You will need to identify important elements of the work in order to cite them. Be sure to look carefully for information on the web, and utilize the "About" on websites. Not all sources require all elements.

4 Elements of APA References
Author The author is the creator of a work. See below for guidance on identifying and formatting different types of creators. If no author is listed, use the title to begin the reference entry.
Date

Use the date the work was published.

If no date is given, use n.d.

Dates can be formatted as (Year). (Year, Month/Season). (Year, Month Date). or (Year-Year).

If two articles have the exact same author/s and publication year, add a and b to the end of the year to differentiate them. Use this on the reference page and for in text citations. Ex: (Jones, 1968a) and (Jones, 1968b)

Title The title of the work is given in sentence case: Only capitalize the first word of the title, the word after a colon, and any proper nouns. Put titles of books and larger works in italics and present titles of articles, chapters, or shorter works in plain text without quotation marks.
Source The source helps readers retrieve the work. This could include the publisher for a book; the periodical title (with all important words capitalized), volume and issue number, and/or DOI for an article; the URL for a webpage; and other elements outlined below.
