This guide will introduce you to crafting a paper in APA style.

Elements of APA Style

The following elements and order may be included when formatting your paper. Papers constructed according to APA guidelines generally include the following elements:

  • Title Page
    • Page Number***
    • Paper Title
      • Bold, Centered, and on the upper half of the page (several lines down from top margin)
    • Author
    • Affiliation -- Wesleyan College
    • Course
    • Instructor
    • Due Date
  • Abstract
    • Start on a new page
    • May not be required for student papers
    • 250 words or less
  • Body (Text)
    • Start on a new page
    • Title should be centered, bolded, and in title case on first line of first page of body of the paper
    • Double Spaced
    • .5" (one tab) indent for each paragraph
    • Subsections within the body, with headings
  • References
    • Start on a new page

Ask your professor if all these elements are required. Some papers may require different sections or heading in the body of your paper.

***A running head is no longer required for student paper unless your professor requires one. 

APA Style Guide Student Title Page Setup

Margins, Font, and Spacing

Margins, Spacing, and Font: Each page has one-inch margins at the top, bottom, and both sides. The entire text is double-spaced, including all quotations and sources on the reference cited page. Include an additional double-space line line between title and author's name on title page. The first line of each paragraph should be indented .5". Single space after each period.  

A variety of font styles are recommended by APA:

  • Sans Serif Fonts
    • 11-point Calibri
    • 11-point Arial
    • 10-point Lucida Sans Unicode
  • Serif Fonts
    • 12-point Times New Roman
    • 11-point Georgia
    • Normal (10-point) Computer Modern (the default font for LaTeX)

Page Numbers

Page Numbers: Page numbers should be included on each page, beginning with 1 on the title page.
